New publication: Self-Improving Cost Estimation for Architectural Projects: A Feedback-Driven Approach

Learning architecture

Learning inspired by neuroscience

Cost estimating is a memory and reinforcement problem. Arkesif models it with neurobiological principles.

A brain does not freeze what it learns; it rewires itself with every new experience. Arkesif's learning layer works in the same order: it collects signals, strengthens what works, prunes what does not, and rebuilds its memory at regular intervals.

01Learning architecture

Why neuroscience?

A price is not a number known from birth; it is shaped by experience. When a practice prices a new project it looks at past jobs, mistakes and corrections. A learning system has to do the same.

  • Price knowledge is built from experience: the system learns from your corrections.
  • The brain strengthens important signals: acceptance and rejection do not weigh the same.
  • Memory is rebuilt: the model is retrained at regular intervals.
Synapses in use get stronger; unused ones weaken.
02Six mechanisms

Six mechanisms

Each row holds three things: the biological principle, how it appears in the product, and the metric we measure. Real mechanics instead of a made-up 'neural network' story.

01

Neuroplasticity

Biological principle
Synapses in use get stronger; unused ones weaken.
In the product
Correcting an item updates its weight in memory; items untouched for a long time lose influence.
Measured indicator
Price deviation after correction
02

Neuroevolution

Biological principle
Variation and selection: structures that work are kept.
In the product
Suggestion rules are raced against past projects; the structure with the lowest error wins.
Measured indicator
Backtest error (LOO MAPE)
03

Hebbian reinforcement

Biological principle
Neurons that fire together wire together.
In the product
Items that frequently appear together are linked; when one is present the other is recalled.
Measured indicator
Missing-item catch rate
04

Reward prediction error

Biological principle
Dopamine reports the gap between what was expected and what happened.
In the product
Accepts, rejections and corrections carry different weights; the suggestion that surprised us most is updated most.
Measured indicator
Error drop per signal
05

Synaptic pruning

Biological principle
Rarely used connections are recycled; the network gets leaner.
In the product
Suggestions that are rejected again and again stop being shown; every shown suggestion becomes more valuable.
Measured indicator
Acceptance per shown suggestion
06

Memory consolidation

Biological principle
Daily experience is replayed during sleep and written to long-term memory.
In the product
Signals are accumulated, the model is retrained in batch and versioned; every change stays traceable.
Measured indicator
Model version and release log
03The learning loop

The learning loop

Every correction is a signal. The signal becomes a feature, the feature updates the model, the model produces a new suggestion — and the loop closes.

04What is live, what is planned?

What is live, what is planned?

Being honest is part of the research: we separate what runs today from what is on the roadmap.

Running today

  • Recency-weighted price estimate (newer prices weigh more)
  • hierarchical shrinkage (stable estimates with little data)
  • calibrated confidence range
  • forward-chaining backtest compared against the median
  • missing-item warnings from co-occurrence
  • versioning and A/B measurement

On the roadmap

  • Multi-layer learning and per-practice fine-tuning
  • automatic item extraction from drawings (IFC and DXF)
  • a natural-language estimating assistant
05Limits and ethics

Limits and ethics

A learning system is only trustworthy if it says what it does. Not a black box: every suggestion shows its source, sample count and confidence range. Nothing enters the estimate without your approval, and models run separately for each company.
